I have often wondered why painting contractors regularly seem to be 'shafted' by project quantity surveyors.
Conclusion?
Most painters start their working lives learning all about the practical aspects of their trade.
They continue, gathering more practical experience. Eventually, they start to do larger commercial projects and here is where all their problems start.
Up to now, they have not had to deal with pricing projects from drawings, painting rates, contracts, contract procedures, variations, re-measures, dayworks etc. and ruthless quantity surveyors whose sole purpose is to ensure that there are as few painting 'extras'/variations as possible.
They have not had to cope with site agents 'bullying' them into carrying out works even when it is clear that locations are not ready for decoration or asking them to carry out additional works with the promise that they will get paid.
Who do I blame?
The painter of course!
Why?
Because it never ceases to amaze me that painters seem to think that they can operate in this 'ruthless' industry without any knowledge or training regarding estimating or contract procedures.
To all painters:
Don't be a victim.
