If you asked a painting contractor "Would you employ someone who said they'd done a bit of home decorating?", you can guess their response.
"That's what's wrong with this industry: Everyone thinks they they can paint"!
And they'd be right. Of course to be a painter you need to be trained. Of course you need to gain a few years experience post training.
But here's the thing: Why, when it comes to pricing/tendering, do painters think they don't need any training?
I often talk to painters about measuring painting works from drawings, unit rates and general estimating principles and how important it is to learn these skills.
"I just price on days"
or
"Why do I need to know about that!" are common replies.
The bottom line is: If you want to have a successful commercial painting contracting business, take the risk out of pricing and be able to competently deal with Contractor QS's, these are essential skills that you need to learn in the same way that you needed to learn about your trade at the very start of your journey.
