How much does it cost to paint a room in the UK

If you are budgeting for decorating, the most common question is the cost to paint a room. In the UK the final figure depends less on the room name and more on the room’s surfaces, condition, and what you expect to be included.

A room repaint can mean walls only, or walls and ceiling, or walls, ceiling, and all woodwork. Those are three very different scopes, and they can produce three very different prices even in the same property. Before you compare quotes, you need to be clear about what you are actually asking for.

Condition is the biggest factor. Sound walls that only need light sanding and a small amount of filling are relatively straightforward. If the walls are cracked, the existing paint is peeling, or there are stains from water or nicotine, the job becomes more about preparation than applying paint. Preparation is slower, it often requires primers or stain blockers, and it is the part of the job that determines whether the finish looks consistent.

Ceilings can also change the outcome. A ceiling in good condition may only need light prep and repainting. A ceiling with staining, hairline cracking, or old flaking coatings needs more work to prevent marks showing through or the coating failing again.

Woodwork is another cost driver. Skirting boards and frames are fiddly compared to large wall areas, and doors take time to prep properly. If woodwork is included, the scope should state which items are included and what finish is expected, because glossy finishes highlight defects more than matt finishes.

Coats matter too. Two coats is common, but not universal. Strong colour changes can require extra coats, and certain shades cover differently even when the paint is high quality. A cheap quote may be assuming one coat or minimal preparation. It might still look fine for a while, but it is rarely the best long-term result.

If you want a clearer expectation for your own room, the most useful thing you can do is define the scope in writing. State whether the ceiling is included, whether woodwork is included, and whether there are any known issues such as stains, peeling, or damp marks. This makes quotes more consistent and reduces the risk of price changes once work begins.
