Decorator day rate UK

A decorator day rate is one of the most common ways decorating work is priced in the UK. It is often used when the work involves unknowns, such as heavy preparation, multiple layers of old paint, stains that may need specialist primers, or areas where the scope could change after the job starts.

A day rate can be fair for both sides, but only when expectations are clear. The customer needs to know what is likely to be achieved in a day. The decorator needs a scope that does not keep expanding without agreement.

A good way to treat a day rate is as a labour cost for a defined working day, with a clear list of tasks that are included and a clear description of what would add time. For example, there is a big difference between a day of preparation on damaged walls and a day of painting on sound walls. Both are valid, but they produce different visible progress.

Materials are the other key point. Some decorators include sundries such as tape, dust sheets, and fillers. Some include primer and caulk. Some include paint. Some do not. There is no standard rule, so it must be written down. If paint is excluded, you still need a clear plan for product choice, quantities, and which areas need primer, otherwise the project can stall or the finish can suffer.

Day rate work is particularly common on older properties, rental refresh jobs where every room may have a different issue, and external work where weather can affect the plan. It is also common when the customer wants flexibility, such as starting with one room and deciding later whether to add more.

If you are offered a day rate, the sensible approach is to ask what the decorator expects to complete in the first day and what they believe the total duration is likely to be based on what they can see. No one can predict every issue, but an experienced decorator should be able to give a realistic range and explain what would extend it.
